PowerSync SolarWrap 400 (Above)
Another take on the multiplicity of portable solar panels for the eco-traveller or adventurer living off-grid. This version offers a large area for light capture, yet rolls up neatly for easy packing. Featuring L-ion batteries, the 400 model cuts charging time compared to Bushnell's previous SolarWrap 250. There's a power gauge to let you know the battery level and a USB output; it can also be pre-charged to get you going at short notice. The SolarWrap itself is pretty tough and it stores away in a cylinder when not needed. $220 from bushnell.com
Speedo Nemesis Fins
Probably the best known water sports brand, these fins – or flippers as many of us would call them – take their design inspiration from the tubercles on the skin of humpback whales apparently. You do know tubercles, right? Those are the bumps on the surface of their fins. More surface area means more push and the holes focus water through them like jets. Lots of other refinements too: enhanced arch support and more tow space. There’s even a finger hole on top to help pull them on. $40 from

Here's a very discreet way to bring a couple of rechargeable batteries with you from USBCell. These work like regular AA batteries (there are other sizes too, though AA are the most common). Yet rather than needing a recharging station to top up, you simply flip open the battery top and stick it into a USB port, like on your laptop. So no extra cables or hardware required, although you can also use a charger if you've access to one. They say they're 90% charged in about 5 hours, but less time will give you a quick fix if you're juiced out. €14.95 from iwantoneofthose.com
