Travel Gear: Wearable tech wars

Off-grid by torchlight and rugged luggage.

1. Underwater Kinetics 312 UltraBox

In truth, Underwater Kinetics is probably a brand only for the most paranoid. It has a range of super-tough, water- and gas-tight cases and wheelies. Its 312 UltraBox is a briefcase-sized model to keep your documents and sandwich safe. All-weather, o-ring sealed, it has dual purpose latches, padlock loops and a stainless steel hinge along its length. Not indestructible, but you might hurt yourself trying. uwkinetics.com, $68m

2. Fitbit Blaze

The relentless rise of fitness-tracking smart watches continues with the Blaze from Fitbit – already a leader in wearable trackers. With a colour screen, steps, calories, heart rate monitoring, and multi-sport modes, it has decent spec, though some might miss an integrated GPS (it uses its smartphone geo data). Alerts and notifications don't match some smartwatches but it'll be half the price of the cheapest Apple Watch. From €200, see fitbit.com for more

3. GoalZero Torch 250 Flashlight

The tautologically-named Torch 250 Flashlight has three-way recharging: through a built-in USB cable, from an integrated solar panel, or a hand crank. As well as a torch, you'll find a red emergency light and spotlight with varied power settings. Wind the crank for one minute to get two minutes of light. The unit also acts as a power source to other mobile devices with its USB port. $80, goalzero.com
