Irish Times journalists secure 10 nominations in Justice Media Awards

Annual ceremony honours work relating to justice, the legal system and legal matters

Irish Times journalists have secured 10 nominations in the annual Justice Media Awards run by the Law Society of Ireland.

Four are nominated in the print/online daily journalism category. Legal correspondent Mary Carolan is nominated for her reporting on Coroners’ Courts and concerns they may be failing families.

Irish Times Brussels correspondent Naomi O’Leary is nominated for her article on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its investigation of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

Hannah McCarthy is nominated for her work on the ongoing investigation into the death in South Lebanon of Irish soldier Pte Seán Rooney.

The fourth Irish Times nominee in that category is Jade Wilson for her coverage of refugees fleeing Ukraine for Ireland.

The Irish Times has two nominees in the podcast category. Suzanne Brennan, Declan Conlon, Aideen Finnegan and Conor Pope are nominated for their programme on Enoch Burke. Harry McGee and Enda O’Dowd are nominated for their series on Gubu, the events of 1982 which culminated in the discovery of a double murderer, Malcolm Macarthur, in the home of the then attorney general Patrick Connolly.

Mary Carolan secures a second nomination in the court reporting category for her article about the EU-Canada Trade Agreement (Ceta) and its impact on the contentious investor courts system.

Shauna Bowers is nominated in the human rights/social justice category for a feature she wrote on prisoners who are homeless after being let out of jail.

Conor Gallagher is nominated in the international justice category for his writing about Bernard Phelan, the Irish man who was incarcerated without trial in an Iranian jail earlier this year.

Naomi O’Leary secures a second nomination for this year’s awards, this time in the same category for her article on the Council of Europe challenging Britain over the Troubles amnesty Bill.

This year’s Justice Media Awards will take place in-person at the Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place, Dublin, on June 22nd, 2023.
