An application is to be made in the High Court in Dublin today for bail for the two US tourists convicted of an "air rage" offence.

Stephen and Brian Jones were sent to Limerick Prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to the offence under Section 65 (3) of the Air Navigation (Amendment) Act 1998. Stephen Jones (39), from Yonkers in New York, was given the maximum jail term of four months and a maximum fine of £700, while his brother Brian (38), from Hopewell Junction in New York, was jailed for three months and fined £500.

In the event of an appeal, the men require two independent sureties of £3,000 and £1,500 respectively and one independent cash bond of £1,000. However, the men do not have friends or relatives in Ireland to pay the sureties.

It is understood that an application is to be made to have their appeal heard early next week at Ennis Circuit Court.
