Gardaí investigating a serious assault on a man in Cork city centre over the Bank Holiday weekend have begun examining CCTV footage.
The 26 year old man from the Midleton area sustained serious head injuries when he was assaulted near the Centra Shop on the Grand Parade at around 2.20am yesterday.
The man was brought to the Mercy University Hospital but later transferred to Cork University Hospital where he is in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
There were a large number of people in the area at the time and the assault was witnessed by a number of people and Gardaí have begun taking witness statements.
Gardaí cordoned off the area as technical experts carried out a forensic examination.
