The Bishop of Killaloe, Dr Willie Walsh, last night offered his personal support to Fr Michael Hogan, a priest who is stepping aside from his ministry after acknowledging "breaches and indiscretions" in relation to his vow of celibacy.
In a statement, Dr Walsh said: "We, as priests, are committed to living celibate lives. We are not, however, immune from struggles in many areas of our lives including our sexuality. We take consolation that Jesus, while condemning the sin, did not stand in judgment on the sinner."
He said he was aware Fr Hogan's ministry had been characterised by a deep sincerity and compassion. "I ask that he be shown the compassion and understanding which he has always shown to others in their struggles."
In a statement issued earlier through the Killaloe Diocesan Office, Fr Hogan (57) said he was deeply ashamed at revelations in a newspaper concerning him. "I apologise profoundly for the hurt and embarrassment caused to the parishioners of Feakle and Killanena-Flagmount, my bishop, fellow priests, to those who know and trust me both within and outside the church community."
He added: "I acknowledge that these are serious matters that affect me on a personal level and in my vocation and ministry."
Pastoral council chairman Gary Pepper described Fr Hogan as a humble and caring man. "It would be a total tragedy if a man of the calibre of Fr Michael is lost to the church."
