A NUMBER of ferry sailings on the Irish Sea have been cancelled today and people have been warned to take extra care during expected stormy conditions as the remains of Hurricane Katia skirt Ireland.
The west and north are expected to be worst hit by the remnants of the storm, which was crossing the Atlantic overnight.
Met Éireann predicted southwest winds would gust up to 130 kilometres per hour in parts of Connacht and Ulster, while the Coast Guard said people should take particular care in coastal and exposed areas.
South to southwest winds were expected to reach gale force on all Irish coasts and the Irish Sea before sunrise today.
Southwesterly winds were expected to increase overnight, reaching strong gale force to storm force on Irish coasts from Valentia to Erris Head to Fair Head. They would occasionally reach violent storm force between Erris Head and Malin Head.
It will be mild and top temperatures will range between 15 and 18 degrees. AA Roadwatch advised motorists to take care on exposed roads, especially in the coastal counties of Connacht and Ulster, and in high-sided vehicles.
