Almost €300,000 of heroin and cannabis seized in Clare and Roscommon

A man in his 40s was arrested and in custody in Limerick

A man in his 40s is in garda custody in Limerick following the seizure of €200,000 worth of heroin.

The drugs were discovered following searches of houses in Meelick and in Killaloe, Co Clare last night.

Gardaí from the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit, operating on a foot of a warrant, searched the two houses at around 10pm where the discoveries were made.

The significant seizure of heroin led to the arrest of one man in his 40s by gardai at Henry Street garda station.

Subsequently, he was brought to Roxboro Garda Station for questioning under section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act and can be detained in garda custody for up to seven days.

The drugs have been sent to the garda forensic testing laboratory for further analysis.

In a separate operation, more than 100 cannabis plants, worth an estimated street value of €80,000, were seized in Co Roscommon yesterday.

The drugs were found during a planned search at a house in Ballynsheglish near Castlerea.

Gardaí said the building had been extensively adapted for the purpose of cannabin cultivation.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is in custody at Roscommon Garda station.
