Jury fails to agree a verdict on Cork GP accused of sex assault

Doctor denied two counts of attacking teenage girl at his surgery

A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case of a Cork doctor charged with sexually assaulting a teenage patient at his surgery almost 20 years ago.

Kevin Mulcahy (57) of Cregane, Lombardstown, Mallow, Co Cork had denied two charges off sexual assault at his surgery in Lombardstown in 1995 and 1996.

At Cork Circuit Criminal Court on Tuesday, the jury of seven men and five women failed to reach a verdict on the two charges following over seven hours of deliberation over two days.

Judge Seán O Donnabháin thanked the jury and remanded Dr Mulcahy on bail to appear again at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on June 9th.

The complainant alleged Dr Mulcahy asked her take off her clothes while in his surgery when she was 17. She claimed he felt her breasts when she complained of a chest infection.

She also told gardaí that on an another occasion, Dr Mulcahy came around the front of his desk and exposed his penis to her and got her to touch his penis.

Dr Mulcahy denied the charges and said the assaults “absolutely never happened”. He said if he ever thought he would be accused of such behaviour, he would not have got into general practice.

“The difficulty one has if you are in my position as a singlehanded GP [IS TAHAT]anyone who wanted to make an allegation — there was nothing I could do about it,” he told the court.
