Teenager who injured arm on glass door settles action for €37,500

A teenager who hurt his hand when he was racing with friends to a school swimming pool has settled a High Court action for €37,500.

Alex Hayes Judge, then aged 14, was racing to the pool at Templeogue College, Dublin, when his arm hit the pool door and shattered the glass.

Mr Justice Garrett Simons was told the settlement was made without an admission of liability.

Alex, of Shelton Park, Kimmage, Dublin, had through his mother Deborah Hayes Judge sued the Spiritan Education Trust, which is a patron of Templeogue College, Templeville Road, over the accident on December 13th, 2019.

In a sworn statement to the court, Ms Hayes Judge said her son’s left arm hit the pool door and shattered the glass during a race with friends to the building.

Her son she said suffered a laceration to his left forearm, extending from his elbow to his wrist, and the base of his left thumb.

Alex was admitted to the hospital where the lacerations were cleaned and repaired while he was under general anaesthetic, she said.

Ms Hayes Judge said her son has been left with a 28 cm scar extending from his elbow to his wrist.

Approving the settlement, Mr Justice Garrett Simons noted liability was very much at issue in the case. He said the €37,500 figure represented a very generous settlement.
