Man (23) charged over Dublin hostel stabbing

19-year-old received dozens of stab wounds at emergency accommodation yesterday

A 23-year-old man was remanded in custody today after he was charged with attacking a youth who sustained dozens of stab wounds during an incident at a hostel in Dublin city centre.

A 19-year-old man was brought to St James’s Hospital suffering from serious but non-life threatening injuries following an incident at St Catherine’s Foyer, a emergency accommodation hostel, at Marrowbone Lane, Dublin 8, in the early hours of yesterday.

The accused, Jason Prenderville, whose address was St Catherine's Foyer, is also to get necessary medical attention in custody after a court heard there were concerns for his health.

He had been arrested and brought to Kilmainham Garda station where he was charged with assault causing harm to the 19-year-old before he was brought to appear before Judge Cormac Dunne at Dublin District Court today.

Dressed in an orange hooded top, blue jeans and white runners, he watched silently as Garda Cathal Ryan gave Judge Dunne the details of arrest and charging adding that he intended to lodge an objection to bail.

Defence solicitor Cahir O’Higgins told the court he was aware of this, “but we are no moving a bail application at his juncture”.

Judge Dunne remanded Mr Prenderville in custody and agreed to request that the defendant would get medical attention during his remand in prison.

Mr O’Higgins said he was “extremely concerned” for the well being of his client and that the prosecution did not disagree.

Mr Prenderville, who has not yet entered a plea, will face his next hearing on April 16th at Cloverhill District Court.
