Man (22) arrested after Limerick shooting

A 42-year-old Limerick man suffered gunshot wounds to his hands and legs after he was targeted by a gunman on a bicycle.

The shooting took place at 2pm on Hyde Road in Limerick city, when the lone gunman approached a house and discharged a sawn-off shot gun.

The victim was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he was treated for pellet injuries to his hands and legs. He has since been discharged from hospital.

Gardaí believe the shooting may be linked to a previous incident at Maigue Way, Carew Park, Southill in September 2013 where a man was shot at while he fled into his house.

At the time gardaí increased their presence in Southill over significant fears that tensions could escalate.

A 22-year-old man was arrested shortly before 6pm on Saturday evening on Mill Lane close to Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick city.

A sawn off shot gun believed to have been used in the shooting was found within the vicinity.

The suspect is well known to gardaí, has over 40 previous convictions, and is an associate of a north side criminal gang.

The 22-year old is being questioned at Roxboro Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
