Man arrested after fatal stabbing in Kilkenny city

Gardaí believe deceased, in his 40s, and his attacker were known to each other

A man has been arrested after another man was fatally stabbed in Kilkenny city on Tuesday afternoon. The stabbing incident occurred on Hebron Road in the city just before lunchtime.

Gardaí believe the dead man, who is from Co Kilkenny, and his attacker were known to each other and were walking in the area when a row broke out between them and a knife was produced.

The deceased, who was in his 40s, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to St Luke’s General Hospital. However, the efforts to save his life were not successful.

Gardaí have arrested a man, who is in his 20s, and said they were investigating “all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault”, which occurred at 12.45pm on the street outside a property.

The arrested man was being detained at Kilkenny Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for him to be questioned for up to 24 hours without charge.

Violent crime

The fatal stabbing “registered in a serious way” in the city, according to Fine Gael councillor Martin Brett, who said Kilkenny is never normally a place associated with violent crime. “It’s a family and it’s a sad, sad situation for all of us to see because in fairness we don’t ever see it,” he said of the attack. “A family are bereaved in every shape and form; privacy is the operative word, let them have their privacy.”

The scene was sealed off and was undergoing an examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau. Gardaí said the State Pathologist’s Office had been notified and a postmortem on the victim’s remains was due to take place.

Gardaí in Kilkenny appealed for anyone with information about the attack on the Hebron Road between 12.30pm and 1pm on Tuesday, to contact them on (056) 7775000.
