Man arrested in connection with Ballina stabbing

Gardaí appealing for witnesses with victim (54) still in critical condition in hospital

A 54-year-old single man is in critical condition in hospital following a stabbing incident in Ballina in the early hours of Monday morning.

The victim, who is well known locally, was stabbed on his doorstep around 4am yesterday.

He bled profusely following the attack and was rushed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. The incident occurred at Tom Clarke Place, in the Parkside area.

The victim underwent emergency surgery in hospital later.

His condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit was stated to be “still critical” on Monday afternoon.

In a follow up operation, gardaí yesterday arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the stabbing.

The suspect has been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. It is understood the victim and the suspect know each other.

Gardaí have discounted suggestions the stabbing resulted from any kind of local feud.

The spot where the incident took place is sealed off this morning as gardaí carry out a forensic examination.
