The death has occurred of Prof Edmund James Joseph Furlong MRIA, BA, MA, Fellow Emeritus, Professor of Moral Philosophy at TCD.

Prof Furlong, who died in St Patrick's Hospital, Dublin, on Sunday last, was born in Belfast in 1913. Educated at St Michael's National School, Kilkenny College, Mountjoy School Dublin, TCD and Oxford University, he was elected a fellow of TCD in 1947.

An operational research officer with the Royal Air Force from 1942 to 1944, Prof Furlong was Tutor at TCD from 1947 to 1955. He was appointed Professor of Moral Philosophy in 1949.

He married Ms Elizabeth Esther Leat in 1944 and the couple had five children Margaret, Andrew, Raphaela, Valeria and Timothy.

Prof Furlong's remains were cremated following a memorial service at St Patrick's Church, Dalkey, on Thursday.
