Gardaí are searching for a man who hijacked a taxi at gunpoint on the outskirts of Dublin in the early hours of this morning.

The taxi driver picked up a fare on Gardener Street in  the city centre at about 4am.

He was asked to drive to Tyrrelstown where the passenger produced a handgun and forced him to hand over cash, his mobile phone and car keys.

The man then ordered the taxi driver out of his silver coloured Toyota Avensis.

Gardaí are searching for the vehicle and the assailant.
