Cuban music and dance for music lovers of all ages and abilities is the focus of this year's ESB World Music Summer School at Waltons New School of Music.

The three-week programme explores different elements of Cuban music and dance through a series of intensive day and evening programmes, workshops, travelling workshops, open days and concerts. The programme caters for all levels of ability from professional musicians and advanced amateurs to beginners with no previous experience. There are also specific workshops designed for schools. The school offers an intensive programme of "full immersion" in Cuban culture for up to 12 hours a day from September 3rd to 8th and an evening programme from September 10th to 14th. Students choose a special topic in either music and dance but also participate in integrated performances with other students.

Director John Mardirosian says the summer school is as much a cultural as a music project: "The theme is music without borders. We're not just teaching instruments but immersing students in a tradition, involving music, dance, folklore and culture."

Information on booking for day/evening programmes, concerts and workshops from Waltons New School of Music, 69 South George's Street Dublin 2 (tel: 478 1884; fax 475 1346; email: info@newschool.ie).
