The representative body for EMTs is the Ambulance Association of Ireland

There are about 800 EMTs working in the State.

To apply for EMT training you must have a D1 driving licence and be educated to Leaving Cert standard. The Leaving Cert qualification may be waved for mature students with relevant experience.

The two training centres in the State are the National Ambulance Training School at St Mary's Hospital in the Phoenix Park and the North Eastern University on the Malahide Road at Marino, Dublin. The latter school conducts ambulance training for the fire services.
