Cork's new Lord Mayor is Mr Tom O'Driscoll, a Fianna Fail councillor who has been a member of the corporation since 1991. Mr O'Driscoll, a communications teacher at St John's College of Further Education, Cork, was elected last night following a mayoral pact between the main parties on the corporation. He succeeds Fine Gael's Mr P.J. Hourican. Next year, the Labour Party will fill the post. As councillors gathered in City Hall to witness the fait ac- compli, members of the Householders Against Service Charges group gathered outside the building to mark the first anniversary of their protest which has led to refuse sacks being dumped on the steps of City Hall every Monday night during the past year. Several members of the group, prosecuted for littering and non-payment of the service charges, have been given brief prison sentences in the Cork District Court but have vowed to continue with their protest.
