Cancer patients are set to enjoy greater access to the latest and most effective drug treatments as a result of a €13 million funding injection by the Health Research Board into Irish research.
The investment will fund 90 clinical trials of cancer treatments over three years, the board announced.
The money is being allocated to the All Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group, a collaborative effort involving staff in 16 hospitals.
Minister for Health James Reilly praised the research programme for giving patients access to new drugs or tests during the trials. The scheme also attracted top health professionals to Ireland and encouraged investment, he said.
