This is the winner of the SFI Research Image of the Year. A Nano-ravine: One of the last stages of the water cleaning process is nanofiltration which removes the smallest particles from the water. Over time, a layer of these particles builds up on the membranes used for filtration. This image shows the layer of particles that have built up (brown), bacteria growing (green) and a view through a tear into the structure of the membrane (blue). Why do bubbles in Guinness sink?: Common sense suggests that bubbles in beer should go up, and in most beers they do. However, during the settling of a pint of Guinness bubbles are seen to be sinking. The image shows the bubbles' paths (arrowed lines) and bubble-liquid fraction (colour surface) 4 seconds after the first pouring. It is the small bubble size in Guinness (about the width of a human hair) and the particular shape of the glass that cause the bubbles to sink. Image: Cathal Cummins/ University of Limerick
