Garda injured in shooting dies

A 29-year-old garda injured in a shooting incident in Tralee in Co Kerry has died at Kerry General Hospital.

The officer, from Blarney in Co Cork was in a critical condition following the shooting incident in Tralee on Sunday. M

He was fatally injured when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head from his official issue Garda handgun.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was asked to investigate but confirmed it was not treating the incident as suspicious.

The garda was at home at the house he shared with his fiancée at Lis Ard on the Abbeydorney Road in Tralee when the shooting occurred.

His family, including his father, a retired garda, were at his bedside at the hospital when he died at about 9pm last night
