The victim - a 36 year old man from Mayfield - was attacked near the junction of Lavitt's Quay and Patrick's Bridge between 12.30am and 1.30am yesterday.

Initially it was thought that the man may have been attacked with a broken bottle but now believe that a blade was used to inflict the slash wound on his face.

Gardaí have begun examining CCTV footage covering the Lavitt's Quay and Patrick's Bridge area as well as surrounding streets to try to identify the culprits

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the Lavitt's Quay/Patrick's Bridge area at the time and saw anything suspicious to contact them.

They've also appealed to any taxi drivers who were in the area at the time and may have any information that can help them to contact them at Anglesea St on 021-4522000.
