Gardaí in Ennis were last night set to interview the man who may have ordered the last fare with murdered hackney cab driver, Mr Liam Moloney (56) to allow them to eliminate him from their inquiries.

Supt John Kerin, of Ennis Garda station, said yesterday that the man contacted gardaí after seeing Mr Moloney's photograph in the media.

The last known fare that Mr Moloney took at Ennis Cabs at Market St, Ennis, was to Clarecastle at 7.14 p.m. last Friday.

Supt Kerin said yesterday: "A man contacted us to say that he might have taken a fare from Mr Moloney at that time and if that is the case, we will be able to narrow the time-line in which Mr Moloney was murdered."

Four days into the investigation, Supt Kerin said gardaí were still unable to identify a motive for the murder.

Initial reports had focused on a botched robbery. However, Supt Kerin said that after an examination of Mr Moloney's wine-coloured Mazda, money had been found in the car.

Large crowds last night attended the removal of Mr Moloney's body to St Peter and St Paul's Pro-Cathedral in Ennis. The funeral Mass and burial is to take place today.
