THREE SEPARATE investigations have begun into the death of a mechanic at Dublin airport yesterday morning.

The incident happened at about 9.30am on a building site at the aircraft side of the airport's main terminal building. It is understood the 44-year-old man was pinned under a wheel of a construction vehicle.

The incident happened close to the old terminal building where construction workers were regarding the apron. The worker, who was employed by one of the Dublin Airport Authority's sub-contractors, was repairing a bulldozer at the time of the accident.

Dublin Airport Authority has a number of construction projects currently under way at the Collinstown site, including Terminal Two and the work on the apron, as well as finishing works on Pier D.

Gardaí were also on the scene carrying out their own investigation, and the Dublin Airport Authority said it too would be investigating the circumstances of the death.

The authority's chief executive, Declan Collier, said: "On behalf of the chairman Gary McGann, the board, and all the staff of the DAA, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of the man involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time."
