Gardaí name pedestrian who died after being hit by 4x4

Gardaí have released the name of the 63-year-old pedestrian who died after being struck by a 4X4 as he walked home in west Cork in the early hours of Saturday morning.

John Bowen, from Rossmore, Co Cork, was fatally injured when he was struck by the vehicle less than 100m from Durrus village on the Durrus to Kilcrohane Road on the Sheep's Head peninsula.

The driver of the 4X4 raised the alarm following the incident, which happened at 1.55am.

Mr Bowen was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Mr Bowen's body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a postmortem was carried out by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster on Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the 4X4, a young man, was uninjured but said to be deeply traumatised following the incident.

His vehicle was later removed for a technical examination by Garda mechanical experts.

The Durrus to Kilcrohane road remained closed for much of Saturday morning, as a Garda forensic crash investigator examined the scene of the incident.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who travelled the Durrus to Kilcrohane road between 1.30am and 2.00am on Saturday morning and may have information on the incident to contact them at Bantry Garda station on 027-20860.
