Gardaí seek witnesses to fatal Cork crash

Girl (4) died in single vehicle incident on Cork to Mallow road

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision in Co Cork yesterday afternoon which claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl.

The girl was travelling with her parents and sister (2) in the family’s Ford Transit van when the incident happened on the main N20 Cork to Mallow Road.

The family, who are from the Doneraile area, were travelling towards Mallow when the van went out of control at Knocknabehy near the turn off for Grenagh.

It’s understood that the van turned over and ended up on its side in the crash which happened around 4.10pm.

The little girl suffered serious injuries in the single vehicle crash and was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The other three occupants of the van, the girl’s parents and her younger sister were also taken by ambulance to CUH but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí immediately closed off the road and put diversions in place to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene of the accident.

A post-mortem is due to take place today on the body of the little girl whose name has not been released until all next of kin have been notified.

Gardai have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at Gurranebraher Garda station on (021)4946200.

They’ve also appealed to anyone who was travelling the main Cork-Mallow Road yesterday between 4pm and 4.10pm and may be able to assist them to get in touch.
