Man (34) pleads guilty to sexual assault of girl (14) in Cork

Accused remanded in custody for sentencing after application for psychologist’s report

A 34-year-old Cork man has been remanded in custody for sentencing after pleading guilty to the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Cork city last year.

The man pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the girl at a location in Cork city on May 23rd, 2014 when he was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.

Prosecution counsel Tim O'Leary SC said that the plea of guilty from the man, who can't be named for legal reasons, was acceptable to the DPP, who wished to proceed to sentencing.

However, defence counsel Tom Creed SC confirmed to the presiding Mr Justice Paul Carney that the defence had an issue with proceeding straight to sentencing .

Psychologist’s report

Mr Creed said the defence team was seeking a psychologist's report on the defendant for the sentencing hearing and that this could be progressed more quickly if the accused was on bail.

Mr Creed said he recognised that the prosecution was not consenting to a remand on bail and he asked for the matter to be adjourned until June 3rd for sentencing.

The judge granted the application, remanded the accused in custody to appear again on that date and ordered that his name be placed on a sex offenders register.
