Man (78) found dead after house fire in Cork

Fire may have started overnight and is not being treated as suspicious

A man aged 78 has been found dead following a fire at his home in Cork.

The man who lived alone in the house on Silverdale Road, Ballinlough was found in a downstairs front room.

Cork City Fire Brigade were alerted to the fire at 1.31pm.

Three fire units from Anglesea Street attended the scene.

The fire, described as “small and smouldering”, was brought under control within minutes.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood the fire may have started overnight but is not being treated as suspicious.

The man is understood to have had limited mobility. Fire officers reported a wheelchair stored in the hallway and a walker frame in the front room where the body was found.

Gardaí at Blackrock in Cork are investigating the incident.

The remains are due to be brought to Cork University Hospital for postmortem.
