A man was arrested in the midlands in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a car chase that lasted almost an hour and spanned three counties.

The man in his 30s was detained by gardaí near the town of Carn just outside Portlaoise shortly after 3am following what was described as "an incident of criminal damage" in Killinarden Heights in Tallaght at around 2.30am.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident but as soon as they arrived at the scene the man fled in a car and travelled at speed along the M7 in the direction of Portlaoise.

He was pursued and eventually detained before being arrested and brought to Tallaght Garda station where he is currently being questioned.
