A 30-year-old man yesterday appeared in court charged with an offence under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act.

The man appeared at Ennis District Court charged with travelling to Ireland with the intention of meeting up with a child, having met up with and communicated with that child on two or more previous occasions with the intent of doing an act that would constitute sexual exploitation of that child.

The offence – contrary to the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998 – is alleged to have occurred in an area of Clare last July. The man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – replied “no” to the charge after caution.

The man’s solicitor, Jenny Fitzgibbon, said yesterday her client is seeking High Court bail. Judge Patrick Durcan remanded the man in custody to reappear before the court next Wednesday.
