Gardaí in Cork have appealed to the public for assistance following an aggravated burglary in which an 85-year-old man was threatened and roughed up by an intruder.

The break-in happened at around 2am this morning when the man went to answer a knock at the door of his home on Pouladuff Road, thinking it was a relative who was calling.

A masked intruder barged in, knocked the elderly man to the ground and threatened that he had a firearm and would use it if the man did not hand over cash.

Gardaí are still trying to establish if the intruder got away with cash in the break-in which led to the pensioner receiving some minor injuries.

Garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination of the scene to see if they can find any DNA evidence that would help them identify the intruder.

Gardaí at Barrack Street are investigating the break-in and have appealed to anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the Pouladuff Road area to contact them on 021-4327300.
