A MAN (29) was last night remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a 42-year-old father of five shot dead on a quiet country road near Blarney in Co Cork last week.
Michael Collins was brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court, where he was charged with the murder of Pakie Hogan at Glen Road, Ballynaraha, Blarney, on February 10th.
Det Garda Kevin McCarthy gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court Mr Collins replied “no comment” when the charge was put to him after caution.
Supt Con Cadogan applied for a remand in custody and Judge David Riordan remanded Mr Collins of Upper Kilmona, Grenagh, in custody to appear again before Cork District Court tomorrow morning.
Mr Collins’s brother, Donnacha (23), of the same address, was also brought before the same court sitting, where he was charged with a firearm offence arising out of the same Garda investigation.
Det Garda Fergal Ashcroft told the court Donnacha Collins made no reply when the firearm charge was put to him after caution.
Donnacha Collins was also remanded in custody by Judge Riordan to appear again tomorrow morning. Both men were granted free legal aid.
Mr Hogan, a native of Rathpeacon, on the outskirts of Cork city, was buried on Monday at St Senan’s Cemetery in Tower, following requiem Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Blarney.
