A MAN, believed to be Irish, was found dead on the ground in Pamplona, northern Spain, yesterday during the opening day of the annual San Fermin running of the bulls festival.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs last night said she could not confirm if the man was Irish, but said the department had been made aware of the death by Spanish officials and was making inquiries into the possibility that he was an Irish national.
Details of how the man died were not available last night and the spokeswoman said that no information in relation to the incident would be released until the man’s identity could be confirmed.
However, Pamplona authorities said the man’s body was found at the bottom of a 120-foot wall.
The traditional nine-day festival has been held since the 1590s. It was officially opened yesterday but the morning bull-runs through the Pamplona streets do not begin until this morning.
