A man was taken to hospital in Cork this morning after he was found unconscious and suffering serious head injuries in a Garda cell.

The man was found by officers lying on the floor of the cell in Togher Garda Station in Cork city at 8.20am.

"He appeared to have suffered a head injury," a Garda spokesman said.

"An ambulance was immediately called to the Garda Station. The man was then removed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital were he is being treated for his injuries which are described as serious."

The man (51) was arrested on Carrigrohane Road shortly after 6.40am following a report of criminal damage on Victoria Cross Road. He arrived in Togher Garda Station at 7.05am and was put in a cell alone.

Gardaí say he was checked a number of times but was found to be hurt during one of those checks.

Supt Pat McCarthy of the Cork North Division has been appointed to investigate the case.
