Gardaí investigating the murder of a suspected drug dealer in Cork last week have appealed for information on a man seen acting suspiciously in the area about 24 hours before the killing.

Supt Tom Hayes yesterday appealed to the public for assistance in locating the man, who was seen in the Oldcourt estate in Ballincollig last Friday evening, a day before Eric Cummins (31) was shot.

Mr Cummins's assailant had waited with an accomplice in a dark-coloured Honda in the nearby Fernvale estate until he came home at about 10pm on Saturday. Mr Cummins was following his partner, who was carrying their 18-month-old son into the house, when the gunman approached and shot him at close range before returning to the car, which left at high speed.

Supt Hayes said gardaí were anxious to obtain information on a man who was seen in the area on Friday August 12th. He was described as being in his mid-20s to mid- 30s, 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in, of thin build, with dark hair and dark clothing. "We'd be anxious to talk to this man or to anyone who might know who he is so we can eliminate him from our inquiries," said Supt Hayes.
