Gardaí in Cork have launched an investigation after a man in his mid-20s suffered serious stab wounds in an attack in the city this afternoon.

The man was attacked in Ardcullen in Hollyhill at around 5pm and suffered a stab wound to the neck and has been rushed to Cork University Hospital.

It's understood the man's injuries are serious and he is currently undergoing emergency surgery in hospital to try and stabilise his condition.

Gardaí have cordoned off the scene and garda technical experts have begun an examination of the scene of the stabbing.
