A man was yesterday further remanded in custody after he made his second court appearance charged with the murder of a father of five in Fermoy, Co Cork, at the weekend.

John Collins (50) appeared at Midleton District Court yesterday charged with the murder of John Mahon at 11 St Bernard's Place, Fermoy, on February 12th.

Mr Collins, a father of three children, with an address at Riverview, Francis Street, Rathealy Road, Fermoy, had been charged with the murder at a special sitting of Mitchelstown District Court on Monday.

Yesterday, Insp Martin Dorney applied to Judge Michael Pattwell for a continuing remand in custody to either Mitchelstown on March 10th or Midleton on March 16th.

The defendant's solicitor, Jerry Healy, said his client was consenting to either date and Judge Pattwell remanded Mr Collins in custody to appear at Mitchelstown District Court on March 10th.

At the previous sitting in Mitchelstown, Mr Healy had applied for free legal aid and said that his client was receiving long-term disability benefit.

He also informed the court that his client was on medication and he asked that he be psychiatrically assessed by psychiatrists at Cork Prison where he is in custody.
