Newspaper’s political correspondent named Journalist of the Year at media awards

Irish Times Political Correspondent Harry McGee was named the journalist of the year at TV3's Tonight with Vincent Browne media awards last night.

Journalism students from Dublin City University were on the judging panel of the annual media awards show.

McGee has been on the political staff of The Irish Times since January 2008, having joined from the Irish Examiner where he was political editor.

He is a former editor of Magill magazine and has also worked for RTÉ, the Sunday Tribune, the Sunday Press and the Connacht Tribune.

He is a frequent contributor on politics to current affairs and news programmes and has been blogging on politics since 2006.

From Salthill, Co Galway, he studied at NUI Galway and the Kings Inns.

The Irish Times was awarded Newspaper of the Year for the second year running, while the student jury gave Journal.ie their Best Website/App award.

Gavan Reilly of TodayFM was recognised as for “Best use of Twitter by a Journalist”, while there was a Special Recognition Award for the Marriage Equality Campaign for their use of multimedia. The judging panel included DCU students Catherine Devlin, Kevin Kelly, Jordan Kavanagh and Caoimhe Ní Chathail
