THE VISIT of Queen Elizabeth to Ireland last month prompted more letters to Buckingham Palace than any other royal visit during the Queen’s reign, British ambassador to Ireland Julian King has revealed.
According to Mr King, both the British embassy in Dublin and the Irish Embassy in London received large numbers of letters from people expressing their satisfaction with the visit, but Buckingham Palace reported an unprecedented volume of correspondence.
“The palace say that they had more letters following this visit than they have had for any other royal visit during her reign – they’ve had thousands of letters from all around the world commenting on the visit,” Mr King added.
“Most powerfully, some of these letters were from Irish citizens who live in Britain and many of them followed the visit and were deeply touched by what they saw and had been moved by what they saw to write.”
Mr King said the Irish community in Britain was impressed with the enthusiasm the Queen displayed and were proud of the way Ireland had welcomed her.
