Independent TD criticises Sinn Féin’s motion of no confidence

Former Fine Gael TD Billy Timmins has criticised Sinn Fein for moving a motion of no confidence in Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The motion will be debated in the Dáil next week, with the vote on Wednesday, the same day as the water charges protest.

Mr Timmins, who is now part of the Dáil group Reform Alliance, was speaking in the House during the resumed debate on the Water Services Bill, giving effect to the Government's revised charges.

He said the timing of the motion was poor.

“I don’t think it serves the country well,’’ he added. “I just think it is a populist move.’’

The Wicklow TD said the motion was not a good idea, even from a tactical point of view, because it would rally support for the Government.

“It will play into the Government’s hands,’’ he said.

He said the motion was aimed at building up “a crescendo’’ for the march against water charges.

Mr Timmins said while he himself had been critical of the Government, politicians should not create instability and agitate purely for self-advancement.
