SEANAD:DAVID NORRIS (Ind) noted that a number of members nominated to the House by the Taoiseach had taken a historic step in forming a group and electing a leader.
He congratulated Jillian van Turnhout (Ind) on being chosen to lead the new group. “I know very much her record in protecting the rights of children.”
The group’s formation was welcomed by Seanad leader Maurice Cummins (FG). Besides affording it designated speaking slots, it would enable group members to make a greater contribution to the House.
Mr Cummins announced that there would be a significantly shorter summer break, with the sittings continuing until July 23th and possibly for a week longer. The next session was likely to begin on September 14th.
Stating that it was his wish to see the Seanad reformed, Mr Cummins said he had an open mind on how this could be accomplished and he would welcome suggestions from any member.
Fianna Fáil leader Darragh O’Brien said the House should sit up to the end of July at least. His party would be bringing forward constructive legislative proposals before the end of the current session.
Ronan Mullen (Ind) said he was glad to see there would be another group in the House. “I want to encourage them to be as independent-minded as the group of university Senators are going to be. If not, we will want to know why.”
Ms van Turnhout said the group would be comprised of Independent nominees of the Taoiseach. They all came from very different groupings in civil society.
“I think our diversity is our strength, and we wish to maximise the opportunity that has been presented to us.”
Fidelma Healy-Eames (FG) said she would ask those who wanted to see the Seanad abolished, “Why are you here? Why are you taking a salary?”
Denis O’Donovan (FF) was elected unopposed to the office of Leas Chathaoirleach.
Mr Cummins said in the spirit of cross-party co-operation, he had no problem in seconding the nomination.
