SIPTU will support trade union moves condemning the bin-tax as well as the jailing of anti bin-tax protesters, its general president Mr Jack O'Connor said yesterday.

These comments appear to represent an increase in support for the bin-tax protesters, above that indicated by the general secretary of the ICTU, Mr David Begg.

Last week Mr Begg criticised the protesters saying the campaigners were "wrong to be leading ordinary working people into a cul-de-sac of imprisonment in pursuit of a political objective".

However, Mr O'Connor told The Irish Times what he was saying was very much in line with Mr Begg's stance. He said the trade union movement was opposed to the bin-tax but was concerned simply about the tactics of the "current" campaign.

He said the SIPTU delegation at next Tuesday's meeting of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions will support the Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union's motion for a trade union campaign against the bin-tax.
