Body lay on Dublin hospital grounds for nearly a week

Remains of man in 30s discovered in disused part of Mater hospital complex in April

The body of a man was found on the grounds of the Mater hospital in Dublin in early April after lying there undiscovered for a number of days.

The man, who was in his early thirties and not a patient of the hospital, was discovered on the morning of Wednesday April 9th, 2014 in an area of the hospital that is no longer in use, a spokeswoman for the Mater said. She added that the man was last seen alive on Eccles Street on Sunday April 6th.

However, a garda spokeswoman has said the body lay undiscovered for approximately 5 days.

Hospital staff informed gardaí of the discovery and the body was transferred to the Dublin City Morgue.

The garda spokeswoman said an investigation into the man’s death, who reportedly died suddenly, will be held at the Coroner’s Court.

The HSE were notified in April of the incident and the Mater hospital has carried out its own internal investigation into the incident.
