The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is offering consular assistance to the family of an Irish citizen who died in Portugal.

The man’s body was discovered in a swimming pool at the Pine Sun Park resort in Praia da Falésia, Albufeira at around 5.04am on Monday morning.

Local Portugeses media reported that the man was pulled out of the water by a friend and resort security by the time emergency services arrived.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is due to take place.
