A 19-year-old man has been remanded in custody to appear in court again later this week after being charged with the murder of a Co Waterford horse breeder last Thursday.

Anthony Barnes, unemployed, of Clonard Park, Waterford, appeared at a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Saturday night where he was charged with the murder of Dick Forristal (67), at Carrigavantry, Tramore, on July 21st.

A second man, Andrew Halligan (21), unemployed, Ardmore Park, Waterford, appeared at the same special court sitting and was charged with burglary at the home of Mr Forristal on the same date.

Mr Forristal was found dead with stab wounds to the chest at his home at Carrigavantry stud at about 2.30pm on Thursday. He had earlier attended the funeral of Kilmeaden teenager Tara Whelan, who was killed in a bomb attack in Turkey.

At the special weekend court sitting, Det Garda Gerry Howe gave evidence of arresting and cautioning Mr Barnes before charging him with murder while Det Garda John Shortall gave evidence of arresting and cautioning Mr Halligan before charging him with burglary.

The court heard both men were unemployed. Judge Gerard Furlong granted them free legal aid and appointed solicitor Pat Newell to represent them. No application for bail was made.

Judge Furlong granted an application for remand of both men in custody to Cork Prison. They will appear again at Waterford District Court next Thursday at 2pm.

Security was tight for the short hearing which was attended by a friends of the late Mr Forristal as well as family members of both accused men.

Mr Barnes and Mr Halligan were escorted quickly from court by gardaí to unmarked Garda cars and brought to Cork Prison.
