Gardaí in Co Cork have launched a hunt for a lone raider who held up two shop staff as they were returning with cash from a bank in north Cork this afternoon.

The robbery happened at lunch hour on the Kanturk to Boherbue Road when two staff from Supervalu Boherbue were returning to work with cash withdrawn from a bank in Kanturk.

The man and woman were flagged down by a lone male on a quiet section of the roadway approximately three to four miles from Kanturk.

The man produced what appeared to be a firearm, threatened the staff and demanded they hand over the cash.

He then tied up the man and woman and fled on foot with the cash. Gardaí have not disclosed how much money was taken in the robbery.

The man and woman later managed to free themselves and raise the alarm and although neither was physically injured, both were badly shaken by the ordeal.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in either Boherbue or Kanturk or on the road between 12.45am and 1.45pm to contact them.

They have also mounted a number of checkpoints in the area and have begun door to door inquiries in the vicinity of the robbery scene which is described a quiet rural area.
