A 30-year-old woman has died after the vehicle she was travelling in left the road and entered the Grand Canal in Co Offaly this afternoon.

The incident occurred on the road between Cloghan and Shannonbridge at about 1pm.

The dead woman, who was a passenger in the car, was seriously injured when the vehicle went into the canal at Clononey. She was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where she was pronounced dead this evening.

The other occupants, a male driver and an 8-month-old boy, were also taken to hospital in Ballinasloe with minor injuries. The road was closed for an examination by garda forensic investigators but has now reopened.
