A 23-year-old woman was killed when her car was involved in a crash with a truck on the main Cork-Mallow road early yesterday.

Mairéad O’Connell, from Lombardstown, was exiting on to the main road at Kilmona, near Grenagh, when the collision occurred just before 7.30am.

Ms O’Connell, a food science graduate, was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

The driver of the truck was uninjured but was badly shaken and was treated for shock at the scene.

Gardaí closed off the road and diversions were put in place for about six hours to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene.
