A woman has been arrested by gardaí investigating the death of a boy in Charleville, Co Cork yesterday.

A woman has been arrested by gardaí investigating the death of a boy in Charleville, Co Cork yesterday.

The woman (42) is being detained at Mallow Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in connection with the death of Anthony Ward (8). She was arrested in Cork city this evening and can be held for up to 24 hours.

Assistant State pathologist Dr Margot Bolster carried out a postmortem on the body of the schoolboy at Cork University Hospital today. It confirmed he died as a result of asphyxia.

Gardaí upgraded their inquiry into the incident to a murder investigation earlier today.
